Yellow cucumber/Dosakayya pappu is all time favourite daal of Andhrites.This dhal tastes very different and can be made quick with less ingredients.Some of their authentic dishes include mamidi,Gongura and Dosakaya pappu.
Dosakaya/Yellow cucumber is a tangy vegetable which belongs to cucumber family.They are very commonly used in Andhra Pradesh.If not, u can substitute it with Chow-Chow but I cannot promise u that u will get the same taste..
Last week one of my friend Soumya passed me some Dosakaya..I am seeing the vegetable for the first time.Of course had heard of Dosakaya but never had a chance to see it.The vegetable looked very appealing and felt like cooking the same day.Dosakaya is used predominately with non vegetarian dishes.It enhances the flavour the taste of the dish.

Preparation time:20-25 minutes
Yellow cucumber/Dosakaya-2 Nos or 1/4 kg
1/2 cup of Thoor Dhal
1 No. of Onion Chopped finely
1 No. of Tomato(medium size) chopped finely
1/4 Tsp of Turmeric powder
1-2 green chillies(slit it vertically)
1/2 Tsp of grated ginger
2-3 Pods of garlic(Optional)
Salt to taste
1/2 Tbsp of Red chilli powder
1 Tbsp of Coriander powder
1 Tsp of Oil
1 Tsp of mustard seeds
1/2 Tsp of Urad Dhal
1/2 Tsp of Cumin Seeds/Jeera
1 strand of curry leaves
A pinch of Hing/Asafoetida
1 no dry red chilli
Wash and peel off the Dosakayas.
Cut and deseed them.
Cube the Dosakayas.
In a Pressure pan add dosakayas,Dhal,garlic,onion,tomato,green chillies,turmeric powder,chilli powder,coriander powder,tsp of oil,grated ginger.Add little water and pressure cook it for 2 whistles or till it gets cooked.
In another pan add oil and heat it.
Then add items mentioned in To temper list and add it to the dhal cum vegetables mixture and mix well.
Boil the mixture to the required consistency.
Serve it with hot rice.A spicy potato masala curry will go well with this dhal.
- Instead of Thoor Dhal we can use Paasi Paruppu.
- A mixture of Thoor Dhal and Paasi Paruppu can also be used.
- Instead of yellow cucumber we can use Chow-Chow or any type of cucumber.
- U can avoid red chilli powder and add only green chillies only.
