Upma had helped at most of the occasions when there was sudden visit of guests during the morning peak time..I don't prefer rava but except me all others at my home love hot rava upma..I love semiya...Hence I always end up at making a mixture of rava and semiya upma..It tastes different from the normal rava upma and normal semiya upma...Everyone at home now started loving this mixture upma than the separate ones...It goes very well with coconut chutney..

Ingredients:
1 Cup of roasted Rava
1/4 Cup of roasted semiya(I used the very thin ones-Anil Brand)
2 and 1/4 cups of water
2 big onions sliced vertically
3-4 nos of green chillies
Chopped coriander leaves to garnish
1 Tsp of grated ginger(Optional)
To temper:
1 Tbsp of oil
1 Tsp of mustard seeds
1 Tsp of bengal gram/Kadalai paruppu
1 tsp of Urad Dhal(Optional)
2 strands of curry leaves
A pinch of Asafoetida
1 Tsp of cashewnuts(Optional)
PROCEDURE:
Chop the onions vertically, slit the green chillies and keep all ready.
Dry Roast the rava and semiya separately and keep it aside
Take a non-stick pan and add oil.heat it
Once heated add the items mentioned in To Temper list in the ingredients one by one
Then add sliced onions, green chillies, grated ginger and saute it well
Add water, salt and bring it to boil.
Chopped coriander can be added now or it can be added finally.I add at this stage.
Then bring the mixture to boil.
When the mixture gets boiled add Roasted rava little by little and keep stirring to avoid the formation of lumps. If formed break the lumps.Keep the flame in Sim when u add the rava.
After mixing add the roasted semiya to it and mix well.
Mix it well and cook in sim flame for 5-8 minutes.
Once cooked serve it with coconut chutney.I love to have it with sambhar
Handy Tips:
- A pinch of turmeric powder can be added to give yellow colour to the upma
- If u are using thick semiya then add it when u are adding the rava itself
- Vegetables like carrot, beans, peas can also be added
- The quantity of semiya used can be increased/decreased according to their taste
- If u add 2.5 cups of water then the upma will be little loose.
Looks very delicious...yumm
