Apart from the aromatic jasmines Madurai is famous for idly and parotta. The chutneys they serve looks very yummy and also tastes so good.
When u visit Madurai don't miss to have Jigirthanda from Famous Jigirthanda shop!!

Tomato Rasam/Thakkali Rasam

Rasam is my daughter Yazhini's favourite dish. She loves to drink rasam after her lunch. So I keep trying different types of rasam at home .When I feel lazy to cook i end up at making rasam. As this rasam calls for less amount of tamarind I love to have it..This tastes too good with hot steamed rice.

Instead of making the same type of rasam try this different rasam and enjoy having it..

Raw Tomato Curry/Thakkali Kai Kootu

I had tasted this dish when I was young...I completely forgot this dish ..Last week one of my friend who loved my cooking blog!! gave me these fresh raw tomatoes from her garden and requested me to post some recipes on it.I was overwhelmed by her love and immediately called up my mom to know any authentic recipes..she suggested to make either kootu or thuvaiyal(chutney).I wanted a semi gravy type dish so that I can use it both as a gravy for steamed rice and also as a gravy for roti/Dosa.Hence ended up with making kootu. It went well with both the things..I am happy that my friend reminded me of this vegetable..

Tomato Sevai/Tomato Idiyappam

Idiyappams and sevai are always my favourite. When we were at mettur my neighbour used to make different types of sevai. They call it as santhagai!!I always make more idiyappams and reserve some to make variety of sevais. They are very easy to make and take very less time to cook.I make idiyappams for dinner and reserve some to make sevai for the next day breakfast...They are very handy to make during busy morning hours.Sometimes when I run out of time I pack it even for lunch!!

They taste similiar to that of tomato rice with less spicyness..U can make the same tomato sevai in different ways.Sometimes I just toss it with tomato thokku too which tastes little different.

Tomato Chutney-I

When I run out of time this is the side dish I make for rotis. They are very handy to carry during journeys and easy to make too. They taste good with Dosa also. With the remaining chutney I mix it up with rice and have it as tomato rice.

It is purely a south Indian style of preparation. There are many variations in which the chutney is made. This is one of the style .Others I will be posting it later.

A single sidedish serves as a multipurpose dish....Side dish for Roti,Tomato Chutney wraps,Side Dish for Dosa,Tomato Rice,Spread for the Breads,Side dish for Curd rice etc..I make it in larger quantities and make all the variations and serve the kid!!

The combination of sweet and sour taste is very yummy to have..

Kara Chutney(Saravana Bhavan Style)

The one that I like at Saravana Bhavan is the chutneys that they serve along with Idly/Dosa.I had been missing saravana bhavan since I shifted to Tuticorin. But luckily an year back Saravana bhavan opened a branch(they should have heard my prayers;-) ) at Punnai Nagar(1/2 an hour drive from Tuticorin). This place is the native village of the owner of Saravana Bhavan group...Apart from it he had also built a nice (and also neat!!) Perumal temple nearby which always offers some type of prasadam to all the devotees ..It is also nearer to Tiruchendhur...Sometimes, on weekends we make a drive to this hotel ....of course, to taste the chutney!!On that particular day there was very less people at the restaurant ...being a regular customer to this restaurant I requested the  recipe of the red chutney from the chef who came out for a break!!!He was in great thought whether to tell or not..May be I was lucky on that day he gave a quick n brief procedure of this chutney!!!I returned back home and made it the very next day(or else I will forget the recipe)and to my surprise it tasted the same..From then on No saravana Bhavan visits!!!

This chutney goes well with hot steamed Idlies and Dosa.It gives a colourful combination when it is served with Idly along with white chutney(coconut),green Chutney(mint) and red chutney(Kara chutney)..Of course u can teach the colours to ur playschool kid!!

Tomato Briyani

This rice comes handy when there are no vegetables available at home except the onions and the tomatoes. It is very quick to make and a nice lunch to pack up.The normal potato wafers/chips goes very well with this.My kids are very much  hesitant to the tomatoes. But when made to pulav/Briyani they very well take it.It is easy to pack and have it for lunch at the office. The recipe I had given below serves 3 persons and the best partner is potato wafers. This is one of the methods of making the briyani. There are various methods of making the tomato rice and I will add the remaining methods one by one as I make it at home.Green peas can also be added.
