Millets Sweet Pongal

I got addicted to millets and started replacing millets for white rice.Infact these millets taste too good and tastier than the normal polished white rice...I had already posted few recipes made of millets like Kodomillet rice,Millets pongal,Millets Dosa, Kodomillet masala paniyaram etc.

I had already posted the sankaraipongal, the rice version..

KamarKat....A sweet with Jaggery n Coconut

Last week on a casual talk my elder daughter was asking me about the snacks which I took during the school days.I was explaining her about the snacks which we had ..like Kadalai Burfi/Chikki,Kamarkat,ElanthamPazham,Then Mittai,KodikaPuli,Javvu Mittai,Panchi Mittai,Sonpapdi etc..

She was more excited by the name kamarkat and kept asking more details about the sweet.I vaguely remembered how it tasted too...As I couldnot give more details on it she called up her grandma and was asking the details...Only then I knew that my mom knew to make kamarkat :).Immediately I grabbed the mobile from her and got the recipe ..

Made it,relished it and gave my kids  a feel of this evertime favourite kamarkattu..

For the ones who are not aware of this sweet..It resembles much to a hard chocolate which is made of jaggery and coconut. It is a jaw breaker..Don't even take a chance to bite the sweet.Just put it into ur mouth and enjoy it getting dissolved slowly..

Puran Poli...Happy Tamil New year

அனைவருக்கும் எனது இனிய தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துகள் .

Wishing u all a very happy tamil new year and a happy Vishu to all keralites..Tamil New year has always been very dearer to me as they celebrate it grandly at my parents home.My mother cooks several delicious dishes on this day and it was a real treat to us to taste all delicious food..

But the scenario is the other way round at our inlaws house. As they are native of Tirunelveli the way they celebrate is entirely different. It starts with a vishukanni of looking at mirror and other things like gold and rice..

I don't strictly follow any of these as I think ...to start anything new ..I believe everyday is a new day..But still I feel these special days are for bringing in the oneness in the family.I love to engage everyone from our family in this celebration and its a way of exchanging and sharing our love and oneness to the dear ones of the family. This is one way of compelled spending of quality time with family..

Made a Puran Poli some days back and thought it would an apt one to get posted for the tamil new year..

Again wishing u all a very very happy n prosperous new year..

Sweet Sukhiyam/Seeyam

Sukhiyam or Seeyam........Call it by any name.....The taste is just unexplainable....Here at Tuticorin we find this Sukhiyam at all small stalls where they make bajji and pakodas....I had been longing to taste it but the quality with which they are made(on the road side) made me to avoid getting it......Me..as a native of vellore had tasted this Sukhiyam with the outer batter of maida...But after scanning through the culinary expert Mrs.Mallika Badrinath's book I learnt the art of making Sukhiyams with the rice and urad dhal as the batter..It tasted many times tastier than the maida batter...From then on, when I make the idli batter I make this batter too ready and refridgerate it...The inner pooram too I make it ready and refridgerate it for 2 days..So I make these hot hot Sukhiyams when the kids want it..

When  I run out of this Sukhiyam batter, I make a mixture of maida with  1 Cup of Idli Batter as  the outer covering for the sukhiyams.I keep substituting the inner pooranam with green gram ,paneer,Khova, etc and give a variety of Sukhiyams to the kids....
