Ethakkappam/Pazham Pori/Banana Fritters

Amazingly it was drizzling at Tuticorin a day back. One of my friend from Shenkottai sent me fresh nethrampazham/Ethakka from her farmhouse.Thought of making it on a cloudy day and have it with Tea for a nice evening..It tasted too good in that weather with a  sip of hot tea.

Though it is 2 hours travel from Tuticorin to Tenkasi the weather at both the places are extremely different. We usually visit Courtallam during this season..Apart from taking a shower at Courtallam falls ,taking a ride in the Shenkottai kerala border is just pictureque.U will fall in love with the place if u visit it during June-July..With a mild drizzling u can enjoy the lovely weather of that area.

For the kids I deep fry it and for us I used the paniyaram kadai to make it oil free!!

Unnakayi/Sweet Cotton Pods(Malabar Special)

When we went to wayanad we happened to taste this sweet dish at one of H's friend's house. It was so yummy that we could not tell the stuffing was scrambled sweet egg.She made 2 versions of it.One with the egg stuffing and the other with the non-egg one. Both tasted equally good.

I was held up with my younger kid yazhini's admission for the last one week. Finally she topped 2nd in the whole lot of kiddies who attended the interview .Was much overwhelmed when they announced the result. She loved this sweet dish and thought I should congratulate her with her favourite sweet!!

Coming the the sweet.Unnakayi in malayalam means Cotton Pods.Since the sweet resembles (Don't look at the shape I had made!!I am a beginner!!) Cotton it is named as Unnakayi. It is an authentic sweet dish of Moplahs of Kerala(Muslims of northern part of Kerala). This sweet, they make during the holy month of ramadan to break the fasting..Ramadan is a holy month for muslims because it is in that month that Prophet Muhammed received revelations from God then it became the holy book,Quran.During Ramadan from dawn to dusk they abstain from taking food, water and all pleasures.Only 2 meals one Souhoor, the food taken before dawn and Iftaar the one taken after the sunset.

Unnakayi is a sweet dish made with steamed, mashed and stuffed plantains which are later deep fried..

Jackfruit Seed Stir Fry/Chakkakuru Mezhukkupuratti

Jackfruits are always my favourite. The flavour and the taste is uncomparable with any other fruits. At earlier days people never wasted any vegetable and tried using each and every edible part of the vegetable/fruit in some dishes. When we were young, my dad used to get a whole jackfruit when he visits Panruti (a place famous for the jackfruit in TamilNadu). My mother reserves all the jackfruit seeds. She use to toast it directly on the flame and serve us as an evening snack. She  also added it in chicken gravies, chicken stir fries, etc. This jackfruit seed can also be stir fried along with the potatoes.I love to have this stir fry with curd rice

Chakka Pradaman/Jackfruit payasam

This is the post that I had planned to post during the Onam week.Due to unavailability of the jackfruits!! at Tuticorin the post got delayed. We were on a hunt for the jackfruit for the past 15 days.Ultimately one of Hari's friend spotted the much awaited/hunted jackfruit and  got for us.To my surprise another wellwisher got it plucked from the Hare's Island in Tuticorin..So that evening my house was filled with the aroma of the jackfruit .I adore the Poo Kolams put during the onam and the Onam Sadya...

I dedicate this dish to all my malayali friends and to all the sweet lovers.

I tried this dish for the first time and to my surprise it came out very well and nothing was left for me.In whatever method you make it will taste the best..

Please feel free to pass me the comments if anything I had missed in the recipe
