Kanda Batata Poha /Aloo Poha

I always prefer the dish which takes very less time to prepare. All of us at home love Poha and mostly for a busy morning i find very easy to cook poha as it gets cooked in a very short time.

Kanda Poha is a typical Maharashtrian dish which you can have it as a breakfast or as a snack. It is also called Batata Powa/Kanda Pohe/kanda Batata Poha.Kanda means onion and Batata means potato in Marati language and hence the name..

Try this easy to make breakfast dish ....

INGREDIENTS:

Serves:2

1 Cup of Poha/Aval/Beaten rice (I used a thin red variety)
1 onion chopped finely
1 No. of boiled potato, mashed well
2 to 3 Tbsp of fried groundnut
1 Tsp of lemon juice
1 Tsp of Sugar
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

For Tempering:
1 Tsp of oil
1 Tsp of mustard seeds (optional)
1 Tsp of Urad dhal
Few curry leaves
1 no. of green chilli, finely chopped

THIS IS HOW I MADE IT:

Soak the poha with little amount of water. If it is thin Poha then soak it for just 5 minutes. If it is thick poha then increase the soaking time.
After some time squeeze out the water and keep the poha aside.See to it that the poha doen't get mashed .
Heat a thick widened pan.Add oil to it and heat it.

Then add the items mentioned in For tempering list one by one(Mustard,Urad dhal,Cumin seeds, curry leaves and finally the green chillies)

Then add chopped onions and saute it till the onions become translucent.
Add boiled and nicely mashed potato and give a stir

Add sugar,Turmeric powder and saute the mixture well.

Finally add the poha (soaked and squeezed),salt, fried groundnuts

Add finely chopped coriander leaves, lemon juice and mix all the mixture well till all get mixed well.

Serve it hot for the breakfast or for the snack time.

 HANDY TIPS:

  • Instead of red flattened rice you can use white too.
  • Thick poha requires little more soaking time.So based on the thickness of the poha adjust the soaking time.
  • Adding lots of onion adds extra taste to the dish
  • Don't skip the addition of sugar to the dish as it imparts an unique taste to the dish.
  • Don't soak the poha for longer time..
  • Mash the potatoes nicely so that when added to the dish it shouldn't be seen separately.
