Chettinad raw banana Pirattal/Raw banana Fry

This post had been pending for many days as I busy learning at photographing people :)..With school projects and assignments I was also glued with my kids at helping them ..It was nice to have them nearby.I enjoy playing with them by entering into their world..What a creativity and imagination skills the kids have..

Coming to the recipe I got addicted to Chettinad Cuisine and in that lane here comes the Raw Banana Pirattal or Vathakkal..Call it by any name..!!If you want a change from the usual Raw Banana Podimas or the simple Raw banana fry..

INGREDIENTS:

Make:2-3
Recipe source:Chettinadfiesta

1 No. of Raw banana/Plantain/Vazhaikaai
1/4 Tsp of Turmeric powder
1 no. of big onion, chopped finely
2 Nos. of medium sized tomatoes
Salt to taste
1 Tbsp of oil

For seasoning:

1 Tsp of Oil
1/4 Tsp of Mustard seeds
1/ Tsp of Urad dhal
4 nos. of Whole pepper
1/4 Tsp of Jeera/Cumin seeds
1/4 Tsp of Fennel seeds/Saunf
Few curry leaves

To grind to a coarse paste:

3 Tbsp of coconut
5 nos. of Small onions/Shallots
7-8 nos. of dry red chillies
1/4 Tsp of saunf
1/4 Tsp of Jeera

THIS IS HOW I MADE IT:

Peel off the skin of the raw banana and cut the raw banana into finger size.
Add turmeric powder and mix it well.
Keep it aside for 15 minutes.

Now do the grinding part. You can either saute the items or grind them and saute it.

I saute the items in a tsp of oil.Cooled it and then grinded it into a coarse paste. The items to be made to a paste is mentioned in the ingredients list.

Keep the coarsely grinded paste aside.

In another pan add little oil and add the raw banana and keep saute'ing it till it becomes soft and 3/4th cooked.Transfer the sauted one to another plate and keep it aside

Heat a pan with a tsp of oil.

Add mustard seeds,urad dhal,jeera,saunf.
Then add the chopped onions after the mustard seeds splutter.

Add chopped tomatoes and saute it.
Then add grinded coarse paste and saute it.
Saute it till the grinded paste becomes dry.See to it that it doesn't gets burned

Now add the saute'd raw banana, salt and mix well.Heat it in low flame till the raw banana gets mixed well with the grinded masala.

HANDY TIPS:

  • Don't grind the paste very smoothly .Let it be little coarse.
  • Don't over cook the raw bananas.
  • Saute the grinded mixture till it becomes little dry.
