Ammini Kozhukattai(Spicy version)

Wishing the readers a very happy
Ganesh Chaturthi....

Kozhukattais are one which I loved to have at any time.As they are steam cooked they don't impart any harm to our diet system...This Ammini Kozhukattai is the regular one which we take as dinner/Breakfast/Snacks.We don't make it on Ganesh Chaturthi as it consumes more time...I make it for a evening snack/Dinner.

My daughter named it as koli(Marble) kozhukattai as it looked like marbles. It is also called as mini kozhukattai. My mom used to make these when the dough gets remained after making the stuffed modak. When pooran Modaks are there we hardly take these ammini kozhukattais..

I love the texture of the kozhukattais. These ammini kozhukattais look very appealing and attract the kids much..

With no wait just click READ MORE to get into the recipe..

INGREDIENTS:

Serves:2-3

1/4 Cup of Idiyappam flour/Rice flour
1/2 cup of water
salt to taste
A drop of oil

To Temper:
1 Tbsp of oil
1 Tsp of mustard seeds
1 Tsp of Urad dhal
1 Tsp of Channa dal/kadalai Paruppu
Few curry leaves
A pinch of Hing

To Garnish
1 Tbsp of freshly grated coconut

PROCEDURE:

Boil water in a non stick pan.
Bring it to boil
Add salt and a drop of oil.
Then add the idiyappam flour/Rice flour

Stir it nicely.Water gets absorbed by the flour. It takes few seconds for this to happen after we add the flour.
Switch off the flame and mix the flour well.
Take a wet cloth(water nicely squeezed)
Transfer the rice flour to the wet cloth.

Tightly tie it and keep it for 2 minutes.
Then take out the dough and roll it into small balls.
Make the balls little small(Of the size of channa/green peas)
Smaller the size tastier the dish.
It is a time consuming process.
Then steam cook the balls in an Idli steamer.I used my electric cooker to steam cook the balls. It takes 5-8 minutes for it to get cooked(balls of channa size)
Usually I make the balls in the morning, steam it and keep ready for the evening dinner.

keep the cooked balls aside.
Heat oil in another pan.
Add items mentioned in To temper list(Oil,Mustard seeds,Urad dhal,channa dhal,Curry leaves,hing)

Add the rice balls.
Give a stir.
Finally add freshly grated coconut(I didn't add it)
Mix well.

Serve it.

There is another version where we can add idly milagai podi as i did with the mini podi Idli and Podi Idly uppuma

Heat oil in a pan(preferably sesame /nalennai).To it add the balls and podi.Mix well.If needed add salt too.

HANDY TIPS:

  • U can also add chopped onions, vegetables to make it a complete meal.
  • If u want it more spicy add chilli powder.
  • This serves good for an evening snack.
  • It is also easy to pack for the kids and they love to have them with tomato ketchup.
  • Instead of Idiyappam flour u can also soak raw rice for 2 hours. Then grind it with very less amount of water to a thick paste. Then heat a kadai and pour the thick batter to it.Keep stirring till it attains dough consistency. Then roll balls out of it.
  • While u steam cook the balls add a tsp of oil over the balls so that it don't stick with each other.
  • Smaller the size of the balls tastier the dish.
  • U can do variations with the balls like tomato balls, tamarind balls, lemon balls etc.
